ReMatTerra Initiative Partners with Song'an Community to Host "Coffee Grounds Fridge Magnet" Eco-Craft Workshop for the New Year

To promote public awareness of circular use and sustainable lifestyles, ReMatTerra Initiative launched an environmental education activity and, with the strong support of staff from Song'an Community, successfully hosted the "Coffee Grounds Fridge Magnet for the New Year" eco-craft workshop recently at the Song'an Community Activity Center.

It is reported that during the early planning stage, ReMatTerra Initiative communicated with Ms. Liu Chang from the Song'an Community Subdistrict Office, introducing the concept and implementation plan of the activity. After learning about the program, community staff actively coordinated venue arrangements, scheduling, and resident outreach, providing solid support to ensure the smooth execution of the event.

On the day of the event, with the organization and assistance of community staff Zhao Yue and Han Ye, local residents participated enthusiastically.

Yuhan Wang, founder of ReMatTerra Initiative, introduced participants to ways of reusing coffee grounds—an everyday household waste—and explained the importance of circular use in reducing waste and promoting green living. With the joint support of volunteers and community staff, residents then used recycled coffee grounds to create festive, New Year-themed eco-friendly fridge magnets.

The atmosphere at the event was lively and engaging. One participating child said happily, "I didn't know coffee grounds weren't trash. They can be turned into such beautiful fridge magnets! I want to try not throwing things away carelessly when I go home."

A parent accompanying the child commented, "Activities like this are very meaningful. Children learn environmental concepts through hands-on experience, which is much easier to understand than simply being told."

A community staff member remarked, "This kind of vivid, highly participatory activity not only enriches community cultural life, but also makes environmental ideas easier for residents to accept."

"A representative from the Song'an Community Subdistrict Office stated that the event clearly demonstrated the positive outcomes of collaboration between social organizations and the community. The community will continue to support initiatives that are close to residents' daily lives and carry strong public-interest and educational value, jointly advancing the development of a green and sustainable community."

"We believe this type of environmental activity centered on hands-on practice is especially effective. It is closely connected to community life and makes environmental concepts easier to understand and accept. Through simple and enjoyable crafting activities, environmental protection no longer remains a slogan, but truly becomes part of residents'—especially children's—everyday lives."

— Yuhan Wang, Founder of ReMatTerra Initiative

The successful hosting of the "Coffee Grounds Fridge Magnet for the New Year" workshop was made possible not only through the planning and organization of ReMatTerra Initiative, but also through the active support and cooperation of the Song'an Community Subdistrict Office and community staff. Moving forward, ReMatTerra Initiative will continue to work closely with local communities to carry out more environmental practice activities, helping circular use concepts take root at the community level.

Rematter Teams Up with Wootopia and NBBK Handmade Collective to Host "Upcycle Market" at Ningbo Mixc Mall, Drawing Over 1,000 Visitors

In June 2025, sustainability-focused nonprofit Rematter partnered with local pet store Wootopia and the NBBK Handmade Collective to host a creative and eco-conscious "Upcycle Market" at Ningbo Mixc Mall. The event attracted over 1,000 visitors, transforming the mall into a lively showcase of sustainable living and creative reuse.

The market focused on the theme of "waste rebirth", presenting a variety of handcrafted items made entirely from surplus and discarded fabrics. Among the featured items were tote bags, keychains, pet bandanas, pencil cases, and pen holders, each demonstrating the potential of giving new life to what many consider trash.

One of the most popular experiences at the Rematter booth invited visitors to create their own coffee-scented sachets. Using a mix of repurposed fabric and used coffee grounds, participants could fill and seal their own sachets on the spot—turning waste into something both fragrant and functional. The activity not only highlighted the creative possibilities of upcycling, but also gave people a hands-on, personal connection to sustainability.

"Our goal is to show that waste is just unused material with untapped potential. By making something yourself—especially from what others might throw away—you begin to see the value in things we usually overlook."

— Yuhan Wang, Rematter Founder

Wootopia added a playful twist to the market with pet accessories made from upcycled fabrics, while the NBBK Handmade Collective brought their craftsmanship and design expertise, contributing unique handmade items rooted in environmental responsibility.

With more than a thousand visitors stopping by, the Upcycle Market successfully brought together families, young creators, pet lovers, and eco-enthusiasts for a weekend of inspiration and awareness. The event underscored how sustainability can be fun, creative, and deeply personal.

As more communities explore solutions to environmental challenges, Rematter and its partners are lighting the way—turning waste into wonder, and ideas into action.
