To promote public awareness of circular use and sustainable lifestyles, ReMatTerra Initiative launched an environmental education activity and, with the strong support of staff from Song'an Community, successfully hosted the "Coffee Grounds Fridge Magnet for the New Year" eco-craft workshop recently at the Song'an Community Activity Center.
It is reported that during the early planning stage, ReMatTerra Initiative communicated with Ms. Liu Chang from the Song'an Community Subdistrict Office, introducing the concept and implementation plan of the activity. After learning about the program, community staff actively coordinated venue arrangements, scheduling, and resident outreach, providing solid support to ensure the smooth execution of the event.
On the day of the event, with the organization and assistance of community staff Zhao Yue and Han Ye, local residents participated enthusiastically.
Yuhan Wang, founder of ReMatTerra Initiative, introduced participants to ways of reusing coffee grounds—an everyday household waste—and explained the importance of circular use in reducing waste and promoting green living. With the joint support of volunteers and community staff, residents then used recycled coffee grounds to create festive, New Year-themed eco-friendly fridge magnets.
The atmosphere at the event was lively and engaging. One participating child said happily, "I didn't know coffee grounds weren't trash. They can be turned into such beautiful fridge magnets! I want to try not throwing things away carelessly when I go home."
A parent accompanying the child commented, "Activities like this are very meaningful. Children learn environmental concepts through hands-on experience, which is much easier to understand than simply being told."
A community staff member remarked, "This kind of vivid, highly participatory activity not only enriches community cultural life, but also makes environmental ideas easier for residents to accept."
"A representative from the Song'an Community Subdistrict Office stated that the event clearly demonstrated the positive outcomes of collaboration between social organizations and the community. The community will continue to support initiatives that are close to residents' daily lives and carry strong public-interest and educational value, jointly advancing the development of a green and sustainable community."
"We believe this type of environmental activity centered on hands-on practice is especially effective. It is closely connected to community life and makes environmental concepts easier to understand and accept. Through simple and enjoyable crafting activities, environmental protection no longer remains a slogan, but truly becomes part of residents'—especially children's—everyday lives."
The successful hosting of the "Coffee Grounds Fridge Magnet for the New Year" workshop was made possible not only through the planning and organization of ReMatTerra Initiative, but also through the active support and cooperation of the Song'an Community Subdistrict Office and community staff. Moving forward, ReMatTerra Initiative will continue to work closely with local communities to carry out more environmental practice activities, helping circular use concepts take root at the community level.
